It wasn't his fault, but at the time it would still be his responsibility and so he dun goofed badly. Because in the end he still killed them.

He did regret it hugely, but he wasn't the one who went to Hades, that was Orpheus to try and rescue his girlfriend. Hercules did the twelve labors to atone.

I think Hercules did go to the underworld at some point, I'm not quite sure though.
