I haven't seen many extreme piercings, but I work in the IT department of a fortune 500 company, and a good number of the employees here have tattoos.

IT departments seem to have laxer rules on things like tattoos and piercings.

tattoos are fine its the body-mutilating piercings that are ridiculous

You get tattoos by being stabbed with needles. That would also be "body-mutilating."

mutilate: to CUT UP or PERMINANTLY DESTROY a limb or essential part of something
or another definition
to CUT UP or ALTER RADICALLY as to make imperfect (i.e. GUAGES)
from thew latin mutilatus (mutilare)
educate yourself before you try to discredit someone. all of those thumbs you got are from people who were equally as ignorant to the fact that there is a such thing as a dictionary

"Alter radically," from your own definition, sounds like tattoos to me. You're painting a picture by putting ink under the skin. That's a pretty big change.

putting something under your skin isnt even close to the same as stretching your ears big enough for a dick to fit through. mutilation is something along the lines of altering the shape or structure of an object, not the color. thats like saying you mutilate a shirt if you decide to tye dye the thing for your 4th grade class.

It still could be argued that it fits into several OED definitions of the word "mutilate." Subjective, but then so is your position that tattoo's aren't mutilation. I'm not a big fan of certain varieties of piercing, either, but I felt the need to play devil's advocate since your bias in favor of tattoos seemed blatant. Consider that there are some who think both hobbies are equally degenerate and unbecoming.
