Why don't people just you know, not buy from Monsanto if they don't agree with it?

Because if the Monsanto seeds wind up on your farm, in any way shape or form, and you don't have a license for their seeds, they'll sue you for theft of their patented genes. Which means if the crops grow out of hand, a seed is carried on the wind, one sticks to you accidentally, they put the seeds on your land, they'll continually sue you until you're bankrupt, and they can buy your land dirt cheap, so that they can take over more of the agricultural market.

Because they have a near-monopoly over the production of soy beans, are one of the largest hubs of agriculture in the world, and have patents on the genetic modifications of the plants they grow making it impossible for other businesses to offer the same service. In countries that don't have the wealth to pick and choose their providers, Monsanto takes advantage of their poverty, poisons the land, and makes it impossible for other industries to succeed.
