The oldest traders, like babylonier, used 60 as their base of number. So the dozen, as a fifth of 60 became the most used trading number. They used a word for 11 too, so this way of counting goods/counting in general is used up to now.

Sorry for bad english.

So it's a base 6 number system?
User avatar #22 to #18 - daentraya (05/28/2013) [-]
Is the 60 thing by any chance related to our clock?
User avatar #24 to #22 - sausageparty (05/28/2013) [-]
Yes it actually is. The clock was invented by them as well, which is why we have 12 hours and 60 minutes.
User avatar #27 to #24 - daentraya (05/28/2013) [-]
Good.. Thank you. I remember watching a documentary on the history of math, but my memory is so vague with all the details, that all i remember about it is a 60 number system used by someone

because you may get problems with the law, if you sppek it out to loud.
A ticket, this would be oneteen!
Get it- one teen.
this is so awful, i should get problems with the law
User avatar #40 - bebulzwebulz (05/28/2013) [-]
one-teen, two-teen...thirteen
User avatar #46 to #40 - mangioluingi (05/28/2013) [-]
that logic doesn't make sense

"thir" is part of third, not three, so then it would be three-teen instead of thirteen
so not one-teen, you should use "first"
firs-teen, but that sounds close to thirteen and a little like fifteen
second and teen don't really have a good way of going together either

I see why we use eleven and twelve
User avatar #121 to #46 - bebulzwebulz (05/28/2013) [-]
that was the point....
User avatar #63 - Johnsfer ONLINE (05/28/2013) [-]
I'm sorry, that would mean the English language would make sense
#51 - poach (05/28/2013) [-]
Our number system used to be base 12 rather than base 10, so eleven and twelve got special names.
User avatar #50 - NekustaII ONLINE (05/28/2013) [-]
then why is 12 not pronounced onety two?
User avatar #73 to #50 - rawrimdaisy (05/28/2013) [-]
and 13 onety three?
#74 to #13 - epicawe (05/28/2013) [-]
that was surprisingly interesting
User avatar #101 - dagreatmax (05/28/2013) [-]
I'm ready for all the hate. Why should this be pronounced onety one? What's wrong with eleven?

For those interested in the answer, Numberphile has an excellent video on the topic of flawed numbering systems:

Wow wait up, if you're giving somebody your number in french (this is how we do in Quebec) we say for example : cinq un quatre (514) trois trois quatre (334) un deux cinq quatre (1254) but sometimes we would say cinq un quatre (514), trente trois quatre (334) douze cinquante quatre (1254). Now how is this hard to comprehend for English people.
User avatar #108 to #72 - dagreatmax (05/28/2013) [-]
Oh and he says soixante and then soixante et onze, we don't take a break when giving a number. We say it fast, so in his video we wouldn't say soixante and wait, we would say soixante et onze fast.
