Yeah I could be wrong but I don't think that lightning caused the bark to come off. I've seen trees that have been struck by lightning and theyre burnt from the inside out. I've even been dispatched to extuinguish trees that caught fire from lightning. a couple had bark similar to this picture.

I don't know if it could happen to this degree, but what happens is that the lightning instantly boils the water in the tree, which can cause it to explode.
