This is what it looks like from the mountain tops in Jasper Alberta. It seriously reminds me of a science fiction setting, it's beautiful

Where I don't doubt the amazing of the views that you can get up in those regions, I'd just like to clarify that you could never get something as vibrant as the picture. In the mountains you have the advantage of less atmospheric interference, you still could never get the same amount of light into your eye thanks to exposure time. The eyeball works like any other camera, taking about 30 frames per second. In that short amount of time, the eye could never absorb enough light to see the high magnitude stars present in the picture. The camera had a much longer exposure time in order to get the clarity and detail it has. Similarly, this is why although as an Astronomy major outside of Philly, I completely understand the pain of light pollution, that's only part of the problem.

And now I realize how much of a douche I sound like. Oh well.
