So if I waste my life studying something that guarantees I'll never be able to do anything but teach, I might occasionally get a slight chuckle out of it?

Well sign me the **** up, because this just sounds like the dream life doesn't it?
User avatar #292 to #240 - vatra (05/21/2013) [-]
Those that do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. It isn't saying you need to devote your life to it, physics is a very worthy cause. However you still need to understand and know history just if nothing else, understand the world around you.
User avatar #327 to #292 - vatra (05/22/2013) [-]
The bloody **** is happening with this thread. When I first got involved the only thumbs were on Lilstow and they were red and about 14. Then I came back and my comment above was in the red by 30, Lilstow was in the positive by about that much, and my other comment on this thread was in the green, now I come back and everything is reversed.

proxy-fags.
User avatar #329 to #328 - vatra (05/22/2013) [-]
Apparently, I mean even if it is a controversial thing, I highly doubt close to 100 people went on opposite thumbing sprees.
User avatar #330 to #329 - Lilstow ONLINE (05/22/2013) [-]
Yea somebody here is really butthurt.

If I feel like it, I might proxy this thing around sometime later, just to spite them.

But honestly, I probably will be too busy studying something worth my time to do that.
User avatar #331 to #330 - vatra (05/22/2013) [-]
Eh. I sooner just leave it as it is, even though one of mine is in the deep red.
#288 to #240 - Spikeydeath (05/21/2013) [-]
Get your ******* doctorate, become a museum curator, there now **** off
User avatar #289 to #288 - Lilstow ONLINE (05/21/2013) [-]
What a life of glamour.
#290 to #289 - Spikeydeath (05/21/2013) [-]
Really? if you ******* love history that is an ace job
going out and getting the antiques and **** for your museum

If that's all you think history is good for, you're an extremely ignorant person. The only way to correctly insult you meaningfully is to call you a ******* idiot. ******* idiot. It's people like you that contribute to the ********** that is an uneducated world.

Not to sound ignorant or anything, but what CAN you do with a History major? I'm headed to college next year, and I was just curious as to what I could do with it.
#261 to #245 - mrcrowleysr (05/21/2013) [-]
I think he's talking about studying history as a major. You can't tak esomehting you like reading as a hobby and turn it into a ******* career.
#310 to #261 - shazmo (05/21/2013) [-]
Psychology = low tier? My mom's a psychologist and she makes like $85/h that's some BS

#315 to #310 - mrcrowleysr (05/21/2013) [-]
out of 100 psychology students, how many do you think find a decent job? plus I'm assuming your mom is >40, in her time it was way easier get a job since there were no baby boomers getting old and not letting their job go.
User avatar #317 to #315 - shazmo (05/22/2013) [-]
Ya now that I think about it she only made about $35,000 a year before getting her masters
User avatar #299 to #261 - Blargosnarf ONLINE (05/21/2013) [-]
And if I study chemistry as a hobby?
User avatar #270 to #261 - ferrettamer ONLINE (05/21/2013) [-]
What are some careers that you could get solely with a maths major other than teaching or financing?
User avatar #277 to #270 - Lilstow ONLINE (05/21/2013) [-]
math and physics majors are extremely flexible and have the widest range of job options.
#273 to #270 - mrcrowleysr (05/21/2013) [-]
mathematics majors are helpful in almost every career. It helps you in programming, finance, statistician, you use mathematics to DJ 4DM1Nistrate the budget of large corporations, etc.
User avatar #285 to #273 - ferrettamer ONLINE (05/21/2013) [-]
Solely
I realize that it helps with all those, the program I wish to get into has a maths degree with the computer science one, I don't see how it should be god tier though. It's useful, but I imagine there are better ones if you only get a single degree
User avatar #319 to #285 - Lilstow ONLINE (05/22/2013) [-]
Also, the advantage of Math and Physics is that if you study them you can pretty much do anything you want.

All you need to do is specialize in something.
User avatar #318 to #285 - Lilstow ONLINE (05/22/2013) [-]
As vatra said, Math and Physics literally built the world we lived in.

Isaac Newton basically dragged us out of the mud.
User avatar #320 to #318 - ferrettamer ONLINE (05/22/2013) [-]
And back in Greek times, philosophers were incredibly important, but it is in the **** tier. I realize math is important, but I'm just confused as to what kind of jobs would solely require a math degree
User avatar #321 to #320 - Lilstow ONLINE (05/22/2013) [-]
Philosophy was only important because it had the highest level of academic standing in a world where basically everyone was retarded.
There was also a time where Alchemy was thought to be a legitimate science.
Philosophy is **** tier now because it doesn't have any real use to society like real science does.

Worth noting is that Philosophy is technically a science because they follow the scientific method. However, just because you follow the scientific method, doesn't mean that you should be respected as a scientist.
User avatar #294 to #285 - vatra (05/21/2013) [-]
The world runs on math, man. If not for math we would still be in the dark ages.
User avatar #265 to #261 - Lilstow ONLINE (05/21/2013) [-]
Exactly.
Thank you.
User avatar #249 to #245 - jrondeau **User deleted account** (05/21/2013) [-]
History's okay, but nowhere near as practical as most any of the sciences in today's world.
User avatar #252 to #249 - herpderpharvey (05/21/2013) [-]
I don't disagree with you. I'm just saying that history is important.
User avatar #256 to #252 - jrondeau **User deleted account** (05/21/2013) [-]
This is most certainly true.
#248 to #245 - Lilstow ONLINE (05/21/2013) [-]
Bitch, please.
"Contribute to the ********** of the uneducated world"?
I'm a physics major. I'll make a real contribution to academia.
Have fun wasting your life.
#334 to #248 - fanathick (05/23/2013) [-]
let's go on the internet and brag about lilstow's physics degree!!

orlynao?
User avatar #257 to #248 - herpderpharvey (05/21/2013) [-]
I admit that what I said is stupid, but that doesn't invalidate the fact that history is important.
User avatar #259 to #257 - Lilstow ONLINE (05/21/2013) [-]
Doesn't change the fact that I would feel like I threw my life away if I were to study it.

Besides, physics has a lot more funny jokes then history.
#264 to #259 - mrcrowleysr (05/21/2013) [-]
but often people are too stupid to understand chemistry jokes that there is no reaction
User avatar #262 to #259 - herpderpharvey (05/21/2013) [-]
Good point. Sorry about that, I've never been the best at arguing over the internet. I get too hot headed and make a fool of myself without realizing it.
User avatar #250 to #248 - ddaappoo (05/21/2013) [-]
ah yes, arguing over the internet, you sound like just the sort of person we need to make our academia better
User avatar #254 to #250 - Lilstow ONLINE (05/21/2013) [-]
People who complain about Internet arguments are ******* retarded.
Arguments are an important and necessary part of society.
Getting into an argument will not hinder my ability to research physics.
User avatar #312 to #254 - shazmo (05/21/2013) [-]
Wasn't expecting that...
