We invited JFK, Stalin and strippers.

There is always a better way to clear up a sentence than the oxford comma. It is generally a good idea to use the fewest commas possible for an easier read. If there's a better way to clear up a sentence without sticking a comma in there, use it.

Isn't that what semicolons are for? Signifying the start of a list?

"We invited the strippers; JFK and Stalin"

I'm happy either way.

The second one is not conveying that meaning, to do that it should carry a colon or a semicolon. It is actually saying that they invited some strippers AND ALSO JFK and Stalin.
#39 - anonymous (05/20/2013) [-]
Either way it doesn't mean what you say it means. We invited the strippers JFK and Stalin would mean what you say "We invited the strippers, jfk and stalin" means. The comma after strippers actually separates the word stripper and the name jfk and if one thinks the way you do it could be enterpreted that way however not necessariy (unless one uses the Oxford comma earlier in the text, then it can only mean what you say). If one says it it sounds the same either way so it is better to just rephrase it.

I have English major relatives who think the Oxford comma is stupid.

I don't talk to them anymore.

I reread this a couple times, but it's funny as ****
User avatar #42 - jedimindaugas (05/20/2013) [-]
I find this comma hard to use as the rules are entirely different in the Lithuanian language.
User avatar #23 - brockyboi (05/20/2013) [-]
I read it as "We invented the strippers, jfk, and stalin." and I was extremely confused.
