You've got to remember the braking distances involved. Drum or disk brakes didn't exist. It was the same layout as a Railway engine or a Wagon, A large pad clamping down on the rim of the wheel.... now that's grand on a 2-8-0 engine, with metal blocks on metal rims along the lenght of a 1000 ton train, but on the car it was a padded leather block on a wooden rim....that's insanity. It's like Clarkson driving the Model T even with drum brakes it was the most dangerous thing he's ever driven.....
