After a while you start having audio hallucinations, caused by your brain freaking the **** out that the ears aren't receiving vibrations, and replacing it with sounds you've heard before, like in a dream: e.g. laughter, busy streets, what the brain thinks should be there.

I had that problem at my father's house as a child. My father would demand to know why my windows are wide open in November.

"Because your house is ******* silent at night! Do you have any idea how disturbing silence is? If I don't leave those windows open so I can hear the slightest wind through the trees, I hear drums all damn night. After two hours I finally realized those drums were my damn heartbeat!"
