"From the fourth Century Lucifer is sometimes used in Christian theology to refer to Satan, as a result of identifying the fallen "son of the dawn" of Isaiah 14:12 with the "accuser" of other passages in the Old Testament."

Your argument is invalid. It says "traditional Christian understanding of the holy Hebrew scriptures, the Torah, Satan is a synonym for the Devil."
User avatar #98 to #97 - aesguitar ONLINE (05/11/2013) [-]
Just because something is used as a synonym for something does not mean that they are equal.

Loquacious is a synonym for verbose, however, verbose and loquacious do not mean the same thing.

Besides, you can find many sites and sources showing the differences between the two deities.

Synonym- "A word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase..."
User avatar #101 to #100 - aesguitar ONLINE (05/11/2013) [-]
"near"

Like I said, loquacious and verbose do not mean the same thing, but mean similar things. In the case of Satan vs. Lucifer, in Christianity, Satan is regarded as the name referring directly to the devil whereas Lucifer refers to god's 2nd in command angel before the fall. And according to some, Satan more of a referral to the most powerful demons in hell than to a specific person.
User avatar #90 to #76 - ferrettamer (05/11/2013) [-]
In Christianity, wasn't Lucifer the devil before he was thrown from Heaven?
User avatar #92 to #90 - aesguitar ONLINE (05/11/2013) [-]
In Christianity, Lucifer was the second in command after God before the fall. He became incredibly prideful and convince many, many legions of other angels that he was more powerful than God. God was having none of it, so he cast Lucifer and his legions of angels into hell. To my knowledge, there is no one "devil", just demons (fallen angels) that are more powerful than others. Side fact: Lucifer is the demon of pride whereas Satan is the demon of wrath.
User avatar #93 to #92 - ferrettamer (05/11/2013) [-]
Oh. That's pretty interesting. If that's what they talked about in church, I might have actually went.
User avatar #94 to #93 - aesguitar ONLINE (05/11/2013) [-]
Yeah, I learned that from simply reading "credible" things online. I only found it interesting. If you believe in that kind of stuff, there are books written explaining more.

Also, read this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_demons_in_the_Ars_Goetia#Prince_Sitri

Need to get to know this guy.

I google translated LUCIFER from latin to english... The outcome was day, and other suggestions were morning star. Jesus Christ refers to himself as the morning star in the book of revelations (Revelation 2:28). So... Satan is Jesus?

#87 to #56 - thebritishguy (05/11/2013) [-]
that makes sense actually
#99 to #87 - anisbanana (05/11/2013) [-]
That actually makes sense... Lucifer was the most favored and respected angel in Heaven, he was an archangel and also the angel of lies and deception... He got an entire army of angels to fight for him. Similarly, when Jesus came to earth, he convinced many people that he was the son of God, (Satan also is the son of God). He got armies of people to follow his beliefs. So Jesus and Satan are both sons of God, and both of them are referred to as the morning star.

Also think about it this way: Every single war started ever was rooted to religion of christianity. All the seperations of land had to do with different religious groups. Jesus subliminaly tought us to hate Jews, just like Lucifer tought all his angels to hate God. Also, the term "Christ has Risen from the Dead", Lucifer was cast down into hell under earth, and this would mean he has emerged to take his thrown. And the ceremony of burying, people in the ground would give a better connection with Lucifer and the people.

Interesting, how did Jesus subliminally teach people to hate Jews and how is he the son of God?

Lucifer is not another name for Satan. Lucifer in the hebrew and greek means "bright morning star." So actually, the word lucifer is another name for Jesus. *insert rainbow* THE MORE YOU KNOW!
User avatar #41 to #15 - stringfingerable (05/11/2013) [-]
Lucifer was the arch angel's original name.
User avatar #28 to #15 - beerterror (05/11/2013) [-]
Lol Lucifer is a Latin word for planet and sometimes goddes Venus. There was no hebrew word "Lucifer", hebrew don't use vowels.

There was no adversary in jewish lore, on Samael, who the Accuser of Men and sat at the left hand of God. Which was later used in some freaky luciferian cult for creating the conception of God having two Sons: Logos - the Word, and Satan.
User avatar #23 to #15 - iloveburzum (05/11/2013) [-]
Lucifer was the arch angel of music, and refused to kneel before what god considered his greatest creation; humanity. He was thrown from heaven for this sin, along with a third of the heavenly host, that agreed with him.
They refused to bow because they claimed humans were evil and would destroy the earth, which they considered gods true greatest creation.

TL;DR satan/lucifer is cool, god's a **** .
User avatar #39 to #23 - fukkendragonite (05/11/2013) [-]
That's interesting, but could there be a degree of bias from Mr. iloveburzum? Possibly? I guess not.

So like... Satan was right.

Well if ever I become religious, I'll be Satanic.
User avatar #19 to #15 - chiefrunnyjeans (05/11/2013) [-]
Yes it is. Lucifer was an angel who rebelled against god, fell, and was sent to be ruler of his own place (hell). Lucifer=The Devil=Satan
User avatar #44 to #19 - luciferiam (05/11/2013) [-]
Its unreal how none of you can use google. Lucifer is mentioned ONCE in the bible, and its just about a random ass king. It's just cultural misconception that has attached him to the "fallen archangel" and "satan". Probably because its a cool name. Ignorance is astounding.
User avatar #104 to #44 - iloveburzum (05/12/2013) [-]
Well done for reading the bible. However there are many more texts than just the bible to rely on.
Also the torah, the quran, and various other attached documents.
Besides, when dealing with made up **** , people tend to make up a load more **** just to make it interesting.
User avatar #106 to #104 - luciferiam (05/13/2013) [-]
2BH i just defend the name often because I like it. Plus... by bible standards, even if Lucifer WAS meant to be satan, hes a far better dude then that douchebag that "created" us.

Not meaning to butt in, but aren't Lucifer and Satan two personifications of the sins? One for Pride the other for Wrath?
Posting as anon because I could be wrong, and nobody with their right mind wants to be wrong on FJ.
