A Functioning Lightsaber. Aw Yiss. Sorry the first pic came out bad... Congratulations! You have just created a sci-fi laser pointer. fucking Awesome

Ehh, i think vibroblade tecnology is more feasible than lightsaber technology.

Define "functioning".

It's not physically possible because the beam would go on forever

Well, that would be difficult to do with light, because weakening the beam would basically just turn it off, It would have to be done with a more controllable yet identical material.

While it's not possible to create a sword or weapon out of actual light, I believe that it's possible to shape plasma into something alike a lightsaber - this being done by having magnets in the "middle", in order to magnetically contain all of the burning-hot energy.

It's a technique used in plans for aerospace-travel, should you wish to find out why I know this.

You cannot just decide to make light not go further. Light will go until other things take all the energy from it, hence why it fades normally

Didn't some kids in a college find a way to focus a beam of light in such a way that it would stop at a certain length?
User avatar #41 to #7 - Kabutops (05/11/2013) [-]
well congratulations, you now have an incredibly long light saber that can cut worlds
User avatar #14 to #7 - thepyras (05/11/2013) [-]
Lightsabers aren't supposed to be beams of light, but bars of plasma.

Was that sarcastic? It seemed sarcastic.

No , that was legit

Oh, well cool then. I did care enough to spend many hours on wookiepedia, the lightsaber article was one of the suggested ones.

I'd rather have a chainsword.

A lot of good it will do when it cut to bits by a weapon more than half its size. Nothing but a vibroblade (A blade with vibrating molecules) that can stop a saber.

***** a vibroblade better have a cortosis weave or it's gettin' slashed to bits, too.

So that's what a vibroblade is, thanks bro

id rather have a sollex aegis energy blade

You are all idiots... Lightsaber blades are made of arced plasma contained in a force field.

The problem is stopping the beam, it's nearly impossible to stop it at an arbitrary point without something impeding it.

as the later comments indicate. the most commonly accepted theory is that lightsaber is a misnomer. the reality would be that the blade is plasma contained in a magnetic feild. the plasma being super heated would explain the cauterization of everything touched by the blade and the magnetic properties of the field and the plasma itself would explain why lightsabers bounce off of eachother instead of going right through

If it's a light saber, and light is infinite, HOW THE **** would they manage to give the beam a finite length?

It isn't actually made of light. It's Plasma.
User avatar #36 to #32 - ZeGerman (05/11/2013) [-]
I know that. Because building a real light saber is ***************** !
User avatar #38 to #36 - chellyeah (05/11/2013) [-]
Actually it isn't. We can make plasma, if you look up the "Lightning Induced Plasma Cannon". so all we need would be the containment vessel and a way to confine the plasma to a certain area
#42 to #38 - ZeGerman (05/11/2013) [-]
"...and a way to confine the plasma to a certain area".

And that's why it's I M P O S S I B L E!
User avatar #51 to #42 - whyohwhy (05/11/2013) [-]
You can actually contain ionized plasma with a magnetic field, the only problem is the size and strength of the field and field generator. Maybe it isn't possible to contain such a system in a hand held saber with today's technology, but a few hundred years ago it wasn't possible to land on the moon with the technology of the day.

TL;DR - **** YOU
User avatar #50 to #42 - bigmanfifty (05/11/2013) [-]
why is it impossible, do you have science?

genuine question btw
User avatar #40 to #4 - psykobear (05/11/2013) [-]
No one ever said they were made of light. That's just a poor choice of name for it.
Even in Star Wars, they never say it is light. The Wiki says it is plasma contained in a force field.

It's just a replica calm your tits everyone.
User avatar #8 - kingarther (05/10/2013) [-]
Unless they have created a Force field that can contain light all I see is a strong laser light
User avatar #23 to #8 - jaxsrain (05/11/2013) [-]
its plasma, the light part of the name is an anochrism, lightsaber sounds more impressive then a contained tube of reciprocating plasma.

i dunno PlasmaSaber sounds kinda neat
