Now of course, I love dogs, and I hate to see horrible things happen to dogs...but maybe, just this once, could we just sacrifice a few dogs to see this become a reality.

Ah, I saw the video of this experiment. It didn't go the full way, they were trying to create machines of war with dogs as the pilot, so that the dogs would want to protect their masters and thus kill enemies. However, they only got so far as chopping off the dogs head. Thing is, it actually worked; there is a full video of the dog head alive and interacting and it actually seems perfectly fine, not even in any pain. They kept it alive via a blood pump that circulated blood out of the brain, oxidized it, then sent it back in. The dog reacted to stimulus such as noise, taste, petting, approval, pictures, and was even fed a piece of cheese (which comically slid out the back of the oesophagus with a plop). The experiment ended there, as people were horrified by it and many morals/ethics were questioned, which led to the scientists leading the project being disbanded and the project was scrapped.

A damn shame, I think. Although I love animals, and would never want to see one get hurt, I think the breakthrough (not to mention scientific research it would implore) would be well worth the loss of a few dogs and perhaps a few humans

They actually did succeed in keeping a dog's decapitated head animated. Click that link and go to entry number two. There's a video of the head moving. Warning, weird **** .

Stalin also had scientists work on "Gorilla-human superhyrids who wouldn't care about the quality of the food they were given"

Obviously it failed, but had he succeeded, he would've rustled NATO in submission

I'm pretty sure that if they spent that time and money on such project, the "dogs" head must have been a cover for human experiment.
I mean, seriously, who would want dog to command such machines. If you can connect a living dog head to this robot and make it work, you can do the same with a human one... who can then actually be a usefull super-warrior.

Anyway, considering modern technology and that even now this is complete science fiction (they didn't know **** about neurology, or maintaining a separated head alive, back then compared with what we know now... and we still know nothing), I dont think that this was a serious project (more like random experiment that military scientists' free minds tend to do when they don't have other limits than their use to the regime).

Pic related ?
