idk, in German 11 is elf go figure.
#62 - sandmage (05/08/2013) [-]
In welsh, it pretty much is like this. 11 is Undeg-un, 12 is Undeg-dau, 13 Undeg-tri, 14 Undeg-pedwar.

Which, as a rough translation to English, is 'One ten one, One ten two, One ten three, One ten four'

Onety one, Onety two, Ontey three, Onety four.

That would make counting so much more fun.
#61 - electrickwalrus ONLINE (05/08/2013) [-]

User avatar #59 - djequalizee (05/08/2013) [-]

When I was younger I thought it was pronounced eleventeen
User avatar #56 - thecomkiller (05/08/2013) [-]
a lot of languages do this for some reason...
#52 - anonymous (05/08/2013) [-]
I know at least my own language and english have special word for 11, dont know how are other languages
Maybe, when our ancestor had established number counting to 10, some hipster got this idea just to add one more thing after ten: "hey, have u ever heard new number called eleven? probably not, it's something after ten"
User avatar #47 - BuzzyBoy (05/08/2013) [-]
eleventeen?
#40 - anonymous (05/08/2013) [-]
What about twelve? Why is that not twoteen?
#38 - anonymous (05/08/2013) [-]
eleventeen
User avatar #32 - zimork (05/08/2013) [-]
If we were raised hearing onety-one, it would make as much sense as elleven. It doesnt make a ******* difference.
User avatar #21 - kaiizel (05/08/2013) [-]
Because it sounds retarded.
#24 to #21 - xxitzchubbsxx (05/08/2013) [-]
if by retarded you mean f*****g awesome.
User avatar #34 to #24 - kaiizel (05/08/2013) [-]

Well if 20+1 is Twenty one and 30+1 is Thirty one,
Wouldn't it be 10+1, Tenty one?
#60 to #20 - dritz (05/08/2013) [-]
i think i just lost 5% of my already withering intelligence.
User avatar #39 to #20 - ultimoz (05/08/2013) [-]
It would be "Ten One"
Where did the TY come from?
User avatar #65 to #39 - hammarhead (05/08/2013) [-]
thir..ty? twen...ty? four...ty? six...ty?
User avatar #74 to #65 - ultimoz (05/09/2013) [-]
Ten doesn't appear to have a TY on the end though, does it?
User avatar #75 to #74 - hammarhead (05/09/2013) [-]
I tink that's what the whole discussion is about. :)
#30 to #20 - anonymous (05/08/2013) [-]
It'd be one-teen. Teen means 10, however it was reversed order though I cant remember why.
User avatar #27 to #20 - bronybox (05/08/2013) [-]
It would actually just be "ten one" by that logic.
User avatar #28 to #27 - diablojoe (05/08/2013) [-]
Yeah, but then why isn't ten called "Onety"?
User avatar #76 to #28 - bronybox (05/15/2013) [-]
But then "twenty" should be "twoty"
User avatar #29 to #28 - bronybox (05/08/2013) [-]
Ah, well then. That's another question to discuss now.
User avatar #51 to #29 - Haentar (05/08/2013) [-]
My guess is that -ty is an abbreviation for ten, so it would be Ten, Two-Ten (Twenty) Three-Ten (Thirty), etc.
#66 to #51 - anonymous (05/08/2013) [-]
the discussion reminded me of this

Hmm...
Onety-One, Onety-Two, Onety-Three, Onety-Four, Onety-Five, Onety-Six, Onety-Seven, Onety-Eight, Onety-Nine....

After saying all that, it makes me realize that it feels really awkward...

User avatar #55 to #15 - whatsgoodyo (05/08/2013) [-]
Well correct me if I'm wrong but the letter U used to be written as V in Greek or something, so two Us was double V = W. I don't know how that translated over to the English language but that's the best I got
