Magic users wear robes because armour interferes with the flow of magic. With other words a magic user's powers would decrease if he were to wear armour, that's why they all wear robes.

I just posted the general reason as to why mages wear robes. Many games do not abide this "rule" and as such you'll find battle mages wearing actual armour, or as some middle ground a magic-imbued armour. I think WoW has/had battle mage NPCs among the Scarlet Crusade in Stratholme, they used swords and I believe shields, but no armour.

**mrloki rolled a random image posted in comment #1898998 at Friendly ** I'd like to say that if that was true they would probably wear only undergaments during hot weather and snow clothing during winter xD I believe that there needs to be some other bonus to using mage robes ( like maybe the magic bonus )
