"The main thing that I learned about conspiracy theory is that conspiracy theorists actually believe in a conspiracy because that is more comforting. The truth of the world is that it is chaotic. The truth is, that it is not the Jewish banking conspiracy or the grey aliens or the 12 foot reptiloids from another dimension that are in control. The truth is more frightening, nobody is in control. The world is rudderless."--Alan Moore

My favorite conspiracy quote.

Conspiracy theorists are more optimistic than the average person.
Theorists believe that not only is there some person or organization intelligent and powerful enough to control everything, but that they care enough to actually do it. And that if they somehow uncover them, that the super-powerful people will suddenly stop doing what they are doing.
The average person is willing to accept that the world is full of random events, random ******** crazy people doing insane things for reasons that make no sense. That bad things happen to good people and good things happen to bad people and they while in some situations we may stack the deck in such a way as it grants favour to someone, in reality, it's just the luck of the draw.

This also applies to internet heroes who think they can do the work of the FBI.

Remember that post on 4chan that made its way to reddit and then finally FJ about the suspect based on torn pieces of a backpack and people wearing backpacks? Remember how the internet found the man's face?

Yeah, well it turns out it wasn't actually him. Also, he killed himself. He jumped off a bridge near his house into a river. It is unclear the full reason he did it, but it is no stretch to imagine this internet post had something to do with it.

Similar things happened to the agents protecting JFK when he was shot. A conspiracy theory was published that stated the agents had an inside job with the mob to allow it to happen. The men who swore their life to protect the president failed, watched the man's head get blown open, and then were blamed for it. All of the agents left the secret service (some because of the conspiracy theory). You would not believe the pain this caused those men. At least 1 of them was forced into hiding for a bit.

Also remember this comical bit: Buzz Aldrin punched another man in the face for claiming he did not really land on the moon. The man was basically saying the biggest accomplishment of Buzz's life was a lie.

Remember: when you're slinging around conspiracy theories, you can very well be ******* up and flinging mud on innocent men. We are not a mob, we have government agencies and the trial system for a reason. It is the only thing keeping us from being barbarians.
