I still don't get how they could evolve to kill humans if humans were gone for a thousand years. Wouldn't that render humans a non-factor in their evolutionary process?

What if they had started to evolve to kill humans before they left the planet? Like they could've been fighting them for thousands of years before they eventually decided to leave the planet.

It takes tens of thousands of years to evolve, so maybe they just haven't evolved out of that state yet, or didn't need to change to cope.
