Koko the gorilla who knew sign language once had a pet kitten named All Ball. Koko picked All Ball because it was a small tailless kitten that was curled up and looked like a ball. Koko was famous for loving her kitty and being as caring as a mother. Unfortunately, after a few years together, All Ball was hit on a nearby logging road. When her handlers told her, she signed "Sad, cry" and "tears, frown, bad". At night Koko could be heard crying loudly for a few weeks.
When Koko's best gorilla friend, Micheal, died Koko was in even greater distress. She saw Micheal unconscious and alerted keepers who tried to revive him through CPR. When they told her that her best friend of 24 years had died she pretended she didn't hear them. When they finally told her she began cry in front of them and tried to hold the keepers for comfort who also were upset. Every night she asked for a light to be left on and would cry for hours. For months afterwords she sat with her chin on her chest, which is a sign of extreme depression. The day he died Koko ran around his room looking for him and kept saying "Sip Mike Lip" which they later determined to mean that she was trying to understand what CPR was. For weeks, Koko would wake up to look for Mike in his room. She for a short time would stay in Mike's room and make a small nest out of his blankets smelling them deeply at night in between crying periods. At one point Koko was crying in his room when another gorilla came in and signed "Koko good gorilla" and "angel in this room". Koko replied with "Angel, believe". Koko has never been the same or as happy as when Mike died and she still will go to sit in his room and smell his covers that still hold his scent.
