Well pokemon can die if you read what gary says in pokemon red/blue. he tells you that you killed his ratticate when you fought him on the boat

ya they made it really clear. if charmanders, charmelions or charizards tales ever go out its the same as there hearts stopping and they just drop dead.

The Pokémon tower in Lavender town is dedicated to dead Pokémon, so obviously they can die.

Hated that tower. Always had feels for the persons who lost their pokemons and had to fight ghost pokemons with a Wartortle, Pidgeotto, Graveler and Bellsprout. Not smart.

And it's apparent in the show that they can die. Since trainers usually rush they're pokemon to the pokemon center, there's definitely something worse than fainting that could happen to them.
