What most people don't realize is that for the majority of movie leases, the theatre only gets to keep 0-20% of its ticket sales, with the rest going to the producer of the movie. Their main source of income comes from concessions, if they can't sell them, they dont earn money to keep the place running.

Go to that dollar store before hand.

There is a dollar store directly next to the theater in my town and they have like 2 whole aisles of candy. I feel like they did a good amount of marketing research beforehand.

Seriously, anyone who buys refreshments at theaters is a chump.

And of course they don't allow you to bring your own food.

Thats because you got a box of blur. Its like $75 a pop and not even that tasty.
User avatar #27 - organiclead (04/22/2013) [-]
I'm pretty sure it's no coincidence that a dollar store opened up right next to one of my local movie theaters.

That's because they only keep %10 of the profit from selling the movie tickets when the movie barely comes out, and only get to keep more once people already have seen the movie so they have to make money through snacks.

If you want to help theaters lower prices(Or support them) Go watch Iron Man 3 3 weeks after it comes out and Avengers 2 3 weeks later as well.

The reason why movie theaters charge so much for the food is because it's pretty much their main source of income. The movie ticket prices give most of that money (if not all of it) to the actual company that produced the film (hence the box office gross). So, the only way movie theaters actually stay running is by overcharging for their food, which usually makes up about 75% of its income.

tl;dr that's how theaters make money

>Mfw I'm a pirate.

Inb4 Youkillart. ******** , the producers and the movie theaters can live with a smaller profit in order to make the **** reasonably priced. No one is going to die of starvation because people refuse to pay 14USD for a ******* popcorn that cost 10 cents to make.

does no one notice the square of blur?
User avatar #31 - jewsburninindaoven (04/22/2013) [+] (1 reply)
At my movie theatre, that costs about $11. At my nearest convenience store, $6. At a grocery store, $8 for several movie theatre trips. Ridiculous.

Well, they don't make much of a profit on selling tickets, so how else do you expect them to make money? Really, the only option for them is to raise the price of the tickets, which would cause even less people to go see movies.

Movie theaters are not all that profitable. That's why so many have closed. Either be willing to pay the rising costs of seeing a movie in theaters or accept the fact that movie theaters will cease to exist.
