Statute of Westminster was 1931. Before then they were just self running bits of the Empire.

As for Egypt, under the Khedive it was occupied and de-facto run by Britain since 1882 , and when it became a Sultunate in 1914 it was a protectorate of Britain until 1922, whenit became an independent Kingdom that was very dependent on Britain and everybody knew that the place was British, hence why Egyptians were rooting for Germany in WW2: They wanted the British out.

Still, the men who built and ran the empire certainly were magnificent bastards.

Egypt wasn't an official colony it had a very strange treaty with the Brits where they controlled everything but Egypt was nominally independent.
