tl;dr below

Right, so, as most everyone knows by now, this isn't for gay rights. A person can be transgendered, but still be a heterosexual. It's not as common, I don't think, but it still exists.

Also gender =/= sex. Sex is based on your biological anatomy. Do you have a penis? You are a male. Do you have a vagina? You are a female. Gender is the psychological part of things. That's where the identity comes in. One of my best friends is a trans. He used to be called Lydia, but now I refer to him as Luke. We've talked a lot about this. He hates looking at himself in the mirror, because he has a very feminine body. He has large breasts, and wide hips. So, while he has the sex traits of a female, he hates them and feels uncomfortable in them, because mentally he's wired to feel like he should have a penis and a small chest. He's taken some steps to try and help the situation such a binder, and cutting his hair short.

To put it in a bit more familiar terms, think of yourself wearing the other gender's clothes. Say you're a guy, a very guyish guy. Just a typical dude. And then suddenly you were thrown in a dress, high heels, bra, and panties. How do you think you'd feel? Now let's say they were stapled to your skin and you'd never ever be able to get them off. How horrible do you think that'd be? Maybe not the greatest metaphor, but I think you get my point.

Also be sure to know the difference between a transgender and a transsexual. If you've been following me so far, then I think you already do know, but if you're unsure, allow me to be clear. A transgender has the body of one sex, but the mannerisms, behaviors, and mentality of another. A transsexual is someone who was born one way, and then went into surgery to become the other.

Lastly, as far as that chart up above goes... I'm as lost as most of you. I think I could make sense of some of it, if I tried, but man I dunno. Someone should get on that.

also pic related, because traps are hot

Best comment here.
But I have one question. What is a transvestite? I've heard those 3 "trans" terms thrown around a lot by people who don't quite know the difference, so this one confuses me because its meaning is less obvious.
User avatar #426 to #274 - NinjaHermit (04/21/2013) [-]
A transvestite is simply a person that cross-dresses, for any of the various reasons a person might wish to do so. Not all transvestites are transgendered, but the line can indeed be blurred or overlapped.
That being said, some of the people who cross-dress for non-sexual/non-gender dysphoria reasons dislike the label "transvestite", because of the negative or fetishistic connotations the word can carry. Heh, in fact, that's why the term "cross-dressing" came about, for those wishing to distance themselves from the aforementioned connotations.

I would like to say they are a person who has gone through the whole shindig minus the surgery. They could have done the surgery, but it's not a requirement to be considered one.

I'm actually not 100% on that, but that sounds about right to me.

So a very very open transgendered person, I guess.

Thank you so much.

You have no idea what kind of ease you just put me at - I'm gender-confused and severely anxious, and reading some of these comments was a huge wake-up call that reminded me that not everyone is accepting.

People get angry and hateful over things they don't understand and.. I don't know, just, thank you so much.
#153 to #109 - Loopholes (04/21/2013) [-]
Thank you! I couldn't of put it better myself.

As for the diagram above, I believe it's not so much talking about parts being feminine or not, I think it's just pointing out that there is varying degrees of gender identity, it's not as simple as a label, much like sexuality, it's more of a scale.
Not a very good diagram to illustrate that point though.

I was trying to find a very good picture I'd seen to help explain this point, but I can't find it, so enjoy more traps.
User avatar #135 to #109 - infinitereaper (04/21/2013) [-]
To be honest I wouldn't mind looking like a hot chick with beautiful breasts and ******* women. Though I'd never get surgery for that. Tis' insanity. I want to age well.

Speaking of, I don't hate people for their gender identities and what not, but at some point you have to draw a line don't you?

I mean, thinking you are a glass of orange juice doesn't mean you are a glass of orange juice, you could act like one, dress up like one, pretend to be one; but you will never be a glass of orange juice.

I think this is fine and all but it seems like no one is questioning whether or not this is preference of delusion. So you like to **** your own gender, big deal, you want to be the other, okay, but as this post illustrates at some point it becomes out of hand. Thus the pictures and "flexibility" I mean, it's ridiculous at times.

So the moral of the story is that I really want a glass of orange juice.
User avatar #152 to #135 - joshuaww ONLINE (04/21/2013) [-]
You don't need to draw a line, really. You see, we have the capability to pretend. We are humans, we have wonderful minds that can do crazy **** . We figured out gravity, we imagined fantastic worlds, and created horrible ways to destroy each other in the blink of an eye.

We have the capability to not only delude, but to make a delusion a reality. All it takes for a transgendered person to feel better are the right pronouns, clothes, and treatment. Maybe you could think of it as a delusion, but what's the harm of playing along?
User avatar #159 to #152 - infinitereaper (04/21/2013) [-]
No I agree, but like the post illustrates I think it can get out of hand. I mean, how far can something go before it's just too much? I think the post and the blue pink blue whatever was illustrating that.
User avatar #169 to #159 - joshuaww ONLINE (04/21/2013) [-]
But what's the harm? It's not like you need to keep track of it all, only keep track of the people you need to keep track of.

I mean, I kinda see what you're saying more now. There's just too many divisions and sub-divisions, and it's a bit silly... which I can see, but I guess all I'd ask to be sure to take it seriously when people identify to them. They'd feel better if you did.

I just remembered who you were. You did those comics for awhile. I've always wondered, since we're on the topic, are you transgendered as well? Or was that just a gag?
User avatar #231 to #207 - UberAndrew (04/21/2013) [-]
I don't think I've quite figured that out yet or not. At the time I thought I was, but as time went on I wasn't exactly sure.

I see. Could've just been a phase. Those happen.
User avatar #241 to #235 - UberAndrew (04/21/2013) [-]
It's likely.
How I feel changes throughout the day. Sometimes I'm content with being a boy, sometimes I'd give my left leg to be a girl, sometimes I feel neutral and I couldn't give less of a **** what gender I was.
User avatar #249 to #241 - joshuaww ONLINE (04/21/2013) [-]
You could be gender-fluid, then.
