There's also an episode where Eddie and Lou have their voices switched, called "Bart vs Thanksgiving"

He's Mr. Burns' personal slave?

funny you should say that, the staff thought it "would be a bad idea to have a black subservient character" and so switched him to his intended color for his next episode

You guys are all wrong. Smithers was black due to lack of communication between Matt Groening's team and the coloring team in the first few episodes of season one. When the tapes were ready, it was too costly for them to redo the colors since back then they had such a limited budget. So they figured to just run those few episodes that way and call it a day.

The reason that Smithers was black for only a few episodes was because the creator felt that it was too racial to put a black man as a servant to a powerful white man. They quickly changed his color to avoid being called racists.

well when the creators thought about it we all know that Mr.Smithers is almost a personal slave to Mr.Burns, And if he was black.....well you catch my drift.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr_Smithers

They miscolored him. He was supposed to be white.

from wikipedia - Jay Kogen said "Originally he was gay and black...But we thought it was too much so we just kept him gay." lol
