The NPR link provided lists the texts as well as further information about the specific 1972 picture. Those women were "rebels" of their time, hence, the popularity of the photograph as showing the fundamental feminist movement in the Middle East.

However, this movement was quickly ended across the Middle East not solely by the Taliban, but most Muslims of Islamic countries. It can be contrasted with women of the United States in the 19th century as they "liberated" themselves in the mid 20th century.
