It is fructose. For anatomy last year as part of the final everybody in my shop class, health occupations, had to do a different system of the body to do a power point presentation on and I got stuck with the reproductive system. Well I copied a lot straight from the book and I accidentally copied something along the line of "Semen contains a good amount of fructose, which gives it its sticky texture"

I think you got the best subject, to me, the reproductive system is far more interesting than the other systems. But, that's just my opinion.

Yeah but it was awkward as hell considering that I was the only guy in the class

I take from your username that you're a nurse?

Yes and no, technically I'm a certified nursing assistant, but it's pretty close

Glucose is a constituent of fructose.

******* biochemistry. Why do I know that.

Nope they are different from each other, glucose has an aldehyde function while fructose has a cetone function (not sure if cetone is the right word in english) they are isomers. I was just stating the fact that semen contains more fructose than glucose

So does glucose, everything in your body comes from what you eat. Our main source of fructose is indeed fruits and it comes from the metabolism of sucrose as well, but that doesn't mean that we are partly fruits or partly cow... Everything you eat will be metabolised so it can be used by your cells. In the semen, fructose plays part in the nutrition of the spermatozoa

At the risk of being called OP, I'd also like to add to the 'Fructose is a primary component in semen' bit by mentioning the fact that eating fruits (and I think vegetables as well) can actually make your semen taste sweeter.

I've heard that a lot, but I can't see how an excess amount of sugar will affect the work of the seminal vesicles, I mean it's a very regulated system, you can't just change the amount of fructose in your semen. However it's just a doubt, my level of knowledge doesn't allow me to say it is wrong, there may be something that I don't know.

I wondered that myself, from what I've read on various postings it seems that whatever eat also has a hand in the production of semen, fruits and vegetables having "natural" sugars, wheras other foods like garlic and onions and other spice foods have a form of sulfuric content.

It's definitely something that takes deep studying to fully understand I suppose

Whoops, I was thinking of sucrose.
I was never good at biochemistry.

You're right, only in English it's spelled ketone.
