All rainbows are circular, but still, nice pic.

Is the diameter of every rainbow perceived the same, and if so, why is that?

It's caused by a refraction of sunlight through water vapour, the big ones being through rain clouds. A good way to explain how the big ones look is to look at a Luna Halo, which occurs on a damp yet clear night, usually when it's cold.

The moon is smaller, gives off less light because it's reflecting, so the Luna Halo is much smaller than a rainbow, but it's still a circle. This is the same effect as a rainbow but the rainbow is much much bigger, extending over the horizon.

As you probably noticed, a rainbow tends to stay at the same distance when you move around, because it's refracting light into your eyes, so it's not really physically there, it's a trick of the light.

You're great at explaining things
I love light halos. Especially on street lamps on foggy evenings

Exactly the same principle.

Also I realised I didn't explain why the diameter of every rainbow is perceived the same. That's because The Sun is always (relatively) the same distance from the Earth, so the light source is always the same distance away and water vapour can only go so high, so the rainbow will always be the same size in your area.

The thing I always love to point out to people is that there's never just one rainbow. There will always be two, with what seems like a darker area between them. Sometimes the second outer rainbow is hard to see but it's always there.

The element of truth on youtube told me that, and also why that is. It's odd how i didnt notice before the dark part

Yeah, rainbows are fun. One of those beautiful things that people just tend to get used to, but if you sit and really look at one you realise how amazing they are. Even without the whole myth of leprechauns and their pot of gold. lol

Rainbows are something i know but dont understand of the full wavey thing. Why is there a rainbow in the middle of ultra violet and infrared? And the creatures who can perceive further than our spectrum, how do they perceive it?
When you know stuff, you know how little you know, and you realize how little you understand, and you suddenly feel dumb

Well the rainbow is showing the visible light spectrum for us but the light *is* being split into the ultra violet and infra-red too, if the human eye could pick them up then the rainbow would be much thicker including both of those ends of the spectrum.

The reason we can't see them is because we have never developed the need to. We're daylight predators for the most part, so we need to be able to distinguish prey and poisons through colour and shapes.

Other creatures such as some snakes don't need to see like we do because they're mostly in darkness, especially snakes like Pit Vipers who go into burrows to hunt. They need to see, but they can't use as much light, so they developed the ability to see in the infra red spectrum which is much more useful in the dark. So they don't need sunlight to see their prey and their prey can't see them.

The way they perceive infra-red is the same way we can with night vision goggles, it just accepts in more of the light spectrum. Beyond the levels that the human eye can, or needs to.

I wonder how it feels like to perceive sonar.. We had a bit about it in school, and some people can. It's near dahm impossible to imagine something you've never felt before.
So many questions and ponderings..

I think the closest to have ever come to it, or the best to portray the idea, is the rain scene in Daredevil, where he uses the sound of the rain to "see" her.

He has supersonic hearing. He can hear someone's heartbeat and tell where they are through walls, and can hear fluctuations in someone's voice to know if they're lying and such. And because he can't see heights, he's not afraid of them, so jumps around "like a daredevil" on rooftops.

I havent really watched any superhero movie but the one with that black guy which was actually quite good. Most Superhero movies seems to follow the same kind of routine with the overglorified superhero and a silly villain who does some ****. I only feel like watching the new one with batman for the joker

"The one with that black guy." Going to have to be a little more specific there lol

I can recommend Iron Man, that was a good film and so was Blade. Hancock was fun, and so was Hellboy. Haven't watched Avengers Assemble yet, so I don't know if it's any good.
