Burning ice - It's not ice, it's an ice-like material. There's a reason why burning water ice doesn't exist.
Condensing the earth down to the size of the marble wouldn't make it "collapse into a black hole", it would be a marble-sized object with the mass of the earth and the density of a black hole. It wouldn't have an event horizon.
The goldilocks zone isn't the ONLY requirement for being "capable of sustaining life". It's like saying that every animal with a tail has "the potential to be a dog", it's a huge oversimplification and suggests there are far more potential planets than there actually are.
100% of your body is stardust. Or rather, has its origins in stardust. But not all types of matter, especially the matter in your body, are created in stars. Most are created through other processes.
The andromeda galaxy IS visible to the ***** eye. It's about fairly faint and has a length less than the apparent diameter as the moon.

Hydrogen and helium aren't created in stars??? Isn't that what the sun is made up of or are they saying that when a star goes super nova it doesnt give off H and He?

in the grand scheme of things, everything we do will be pointless. do we give even a fraction of a **** about the daily lives and acheivements of bacteria? no. similarly, a universe millions of quadrillions of times bigger than us if not affected by what we may think to be serious **** . if i didn't believe this quote, i'd probably spend alot less time on the internet

i know, incoming tidal wave of red thumbs. like the universe, not a single **** given
#340 to #338 - anomolous (04/06/2013) [-]
the problem with this argument is that the dichotomy of pointless/not pointless is NOT OBJECTIVE. Meaning, if ANYTHING holds meaning to you, subjectively, it has a point, to you. In other words, YEAH, there is no scientific validation of meaning, but that's completely irrelevant. Meaning does not exist "outside." It exists in you, in your thoughts and your perception.
User avatar #344 to #340 - thempc (04/06/2013) [-]
i guess that makes sense. relevancy is relevant. is it relevant to the fate of the universe? probably not. but if is it relevant to your daily life? yes. point taken. that's still a good quote/concept to use against some douchebag who acts like they're the center of the universe
#345 to #344 - anomolous (04/06/2013) [-]
Exactly :D
Agreed, about douches.
User avatar #346 to #345 - thempc (04/06/2013) [-]
just to put it in perspective for them. "hello sir, i just want you to know that in the grand scheme of things, you don't mean **** "
#347 to #346 - anomolous (04/06/2013) [-]
and to make matters worse... they probably don't mean **** to themselves, either. They only believe they mean **** to someone else, who doesn't exist.
User avatar #348 to #347 - thempc (04/06/2013) [-]
exactly. douchebags thrive off attention from others. they couldn't handle a lifestyle like mine. goddamn spellcheck, recognoze douchebag as a word already

and here I sit wondering how the **** they calculated that the days were shortened by 1.8 microseconds by an earthquake. Like, seriously, under controlled experimental conditions that should be ******* impossible to quantify.
User avatar #323 - anonymoose (04/06/2013) [-]
540*(10^9)*(10^12)*(9.11*10^-31) = 4.9*10^-7

which is 0.00045 grams.

Either this is wrong or someone goes to a really **** grocer.
User avatar #322 - mulletmafia (04/06/2013) [-]
how did the earthquake shorten the days?

My science teacher asked this question to the class the other day: "If I take an MP3 player & load 600 songs on it, will it weigh more?" The funniest response by far was, "Yes, because they have little 1's & 0's on them, & the 0's weigh more than the 1's because the 1's are just a line, but the 0's are a whole circle."
