Corn is an old generic word for all kinds of grain like barley, wheat and rye.
It was used in the Americas to describe maize or sweetcorn.

Obviously since the ancient Greeks and the guys who translated their texts into English didn't know about America or the mysterious plant there called maize that would later also be known as corn, they didn't bother to distinguish them.

So that IS in fact a cornfield.

and how would the old greeks know about a plant brought to europe around the year 1500. of course they ment wheat
