Lucas Arts has been shut down
There’s been a great disturbance in the Force, and it’s very bad day for Star Wars fans and video game lovers alike.
Disney has reportedly shut down LucasArts, the studio behind countless Star Wars video games and classic titles like The Secret of Monkey Island. According to a statement obtained by GameInformer, more than 150 employees have been laid off, and new games like Star Wars 1313 and First Assault have likely been cancelled, although firm details have yet to come in.
Disney promises that new Star Wars video games will still be made in the future, but they’ll be handled by other development studios and may have the ‘LucasArts’ branding. The new movie Star Wars: Episode VII is currently in pre-production, so it seems obvious that there will be at least a few games based on that.
The news is certainly disappointing, but shouldn’t come as too big a surprise. Disney recently announced a restructuring of Lucasfilm Animation, and cancelled the popular TV series Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
