I don't get it either. In wikipedia it says it's space opera, but space opera is a subgenre of science fiction...

space opera is a phrase for epic in the spcae/ sci-fi genre.
Only a few titles have been designated space opera.

Star Wars is deeply rooted in classic elements of fantasy: Damsel in distress, the magic hermit who sends the unlikely hero on his journey, and the entire saga is one huge story modeled on the hero's cycle. (Other examples of the hero's cycle include the Lord of the Rings and Avatar: The Last Airbender)
The fact that it involvs guns and lasers and **** and is set in space really doesn't have any bearing on its genre...
Science fiction differs from fantasy in that it deals with things that might someday be possible, or that embody the pretense of realism. (You know, stuff like time travel and black holes and crap) Fantasy tends to deal with supernatural elements like magic, shapeshifting, and, yes, the Force.

Therefore, Star Wars is more closely related to fantasy than it is to science fiction.

I accept that my statement was misinformed, as I was swayed by your superior logic.

It's Science Fantasy.
It's actually almost considered High Fantasy, which is even better.
