I forgot where I saw this, but if you look at it this way the show makes some weird sense.

Basically, Courage is a dog and we see the show through his eyes. Now since Muriel and Eustice are old as **** , they never take the dog out. So everything around the house being a barren wasteland would make sense since he's always in the house. etc, etc

Now, I know you've all heard this before, but since the story was about the dog, consider the following: The dog sees the home as his whole world. The old man and woman actually live in a populated area, but since the dog only perceives his home as his entire world, the rest of the world looks to be a barren wasteland. the monsters he encounters are just strangers that he doesn't know how to deal with.

Actually there are neighbors, but because coward, the cowardly dog is such a coward, he doesn't dare to get out of his house/garden and it feels like a big open field to him. Just sayin'.

what most people don't understand is that the whole alone in the desert thing is only because that's how the dog views it, as he has never known anything else in his mind, its their house, and nothing else, but in reality, its a house in the suburbs so there is neighbors
