It doesn't mean never take to the movies on first date, it means exclusively. If you were to do dinner first then movies, technically the dinner would be the first date with the movie a follow up.

The reason behind this is that most people find movies not romantic for a first date, you both sit in close proximity for 2 hours staring at a screen not talking, during a first date you should never be to forward about kissing/touching (a gentlemen waits till the end of the first date to kiss) so a dinner for a first date is better to learn about the other person.

"same reason as comment 157 down below" and also if you need conversation material to talk to the girl about, either you met her randomly on the spot and asked her out (in which case you're pretty alpha enough to get through dinner without much problem) or you might be a beta fish swimming in the sea of life, looking for a CURRENT movie to help you along.
talk about the girl's interests (girl's love to talk about themselves) or ask the guy about his plans (guys love to boast).

quick brotips:
never approach women in groups of 3 or more, because they are with friends they will want to be hive mind and stay together, instantly shooting down anything that approaches.
Girl's in groups of 2 work out quite nicely if you hit on the one girl, but leave a good impression and don't ignore the other, that way the other girl will go "yeah he was pretty cute, and didn't ignore me like a jerk who would take you away from me!!"
Try to get a girl that respects herself, because then she's more likely to respect you.
If the above doesn't fit your cup of tea, you can find a AAA girl that rates herself a low B-leaguer, raise her up and she will remain loyal to you.
Don't just try to get the pretty girl to show off to your friends, try and get the long lasting one (bonus points for freaky stories to tell) that stays with you when your friends are all single. last laugh always wins and all.
I can probably think of some more but this comment is nearing Tl;Dr length.

Tl;Dr Be nice.

haha that WOULD be able to get a good percentage of girls, but not the ones that you would ultimately want to keep.

Well I have taken people to movies and then to eat.. That always turns out well

that's because the movie wasn't the exclusive item of the night. if it was you wouldn't really learn much about the person except for what you learned talking before and after. Also dinner helps you realize how expensive they might be later on, what their taste is in regards to eating places and food, even their hand-eye coordination if you watch them close enough
