You have an excellent point, but even if Surge was 6 feet like the anon up there stated, that would make Ash 3 feet tall.. I'm pretty sure he isn't a midget, the rest of the adults in the show aren't too much bigger than Ash.

Well, the average 10 year old - according to pediatrics.about.com/library/growth_charts/nboystwo.htm - is about 52 inches tall, which is 4'4".
So, assuming that Ash would be Asian, he could be at the upper end of the 3 feet range.
I would assume that Lt. Surge is from 6-7 feet tall, so this is actually possible.

7'08" would make him much taller than the average man, true, but it's still a possible height. He'd be around number 45 on this list en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tallest_people, so if Ash is at the lowest end of his height range, Surge might be at the upper end.

He basically is in a decently high seat of command in the East India Company. He's gay, and that brought him a lot of pain and feelings of ostricization back in Holland. In the trades and what-not, he found a book about bushido, and how it emphasizes male companionship and what-not. So, he felt that he could be much more accepted in Japan than in Holland (considering the time period this takes place in).

In the episode itself, he's along with the crew because he won an eating contest against them and some other contestants. Upon winning, he won Mugen and Jin's sword and a knife Fuu carries with her. So, they agree to take him site-seeing in exchange for their stuff back. Meanwhile some shady dudes from the East India Company are trying to wrangle him back.

Ha ha, a little complicated for just one episode, I suppose.
