theres a professor here at UNLV (predator pilots are stationed near vegas) who is doing research on the fact that predator pilots suffer more PTSD than infantry soldiers, due to the fact that they arent constantly exposed to combat, and go home to a family that they cant talk to about their experiences with, like a grunt can with his battlebuddies. as a grunt, im skeptical of her research, but it made sense when she explained it in her lecture. thoughts?

Some people saw the creation of unmanned combat Mobile Suit as a solution to the warfare that long plagued the Earth Sphere. Without the casualties that resulted from traditional combat, the most horrifying aspect of war, death, was all but removed. But the Mobile Doll was fundamentally a weapon of mass destruction, and when you remove the human element from that destruction, warfare becomes all the more meaningless.
I wont lie on my last deployment I didn't exactly see any crazy shit but I mean I saw enough and I don't have any ptsd or that shit but I hear about these drone operators applying for mental help for ptsd and I'm just a little shocked.
When you're flying am F-16 or F-18 or really any fighter air craft you don't really see the complete physical devastation of your payload (you're sight is obstructed by the aircraft and the sheer fact you're traveling so fast). But in a drone you have thermal imaging and are travelling much slower than a jet. You see the blood and the body parts that go spraying when you make a successful hit. It's like putting a grenade in someones tac-vest and running to a safe distance and watching them explode. Pretty harsh stuff.
These guys are the poor fuckers. Thought they'd bet getting into aviation and possibly setting up for a good career in the airlines, or a job as a fighter pilot for a decade.
Noooo. They're stuck in a chair in a box, flinging death missles from halfway around the world. There's nowhere to go from that job. Once you're done, you've exhausted the opportunites available from that training.

There's some sort of underlying thing or story behind this that's stopping me from understanding the joke.
US military came out with a medal for drone pilots that would be above the Purple Heart and Bronze Star (With Valor).
Essentially saying that a Drone pilot sitting in a chair 6000 miles away can be awarded a medal that you generally give to soldiers in the field.
The medal has since been knocked down a few notches after massive complaint from the military community.

To all the ones saying drone operators should not get medals for combat, I disagree. I know a few guys in that career field. Yes, they are not exposed to direct fire or the threat of being physically harmed but put yourself in their job. The usual shift is 12-13 hours sitting at a computer monitoring in real time. Witnessing people being killed from a gods eye point of view and you being unable to help other than give commands really is stressful. It is a different type of combat experience. Not only that, but seeing it year round as a usual job instead of a deployment makes it worst.
The real faggots that should be made fun of are the ones who work at Finance, TMO, public health, ect. Like the chick about a year ago who go a bronze star for doing paperwork in an airconditioned office. Those folks are lucky to even get deployed.

Maybe you should reconsider your career choices if you feel that way about your MOS. The UAV pilots/operators deserve a medal just as much as the ones getting shot at. But not the same medals. They don't deserve a medal of honor but they definitely deserve recognition for that particular AFSC.

I can only imagine how pissed off veterans who actually toured iraq or afghanistan must be to see one of these drone operators with a medal. Earned while half a world away from the actual conflict.
Drone operators getting distinguished warfare medals is fucking retarded.
