Well then you are really taking issue with the Christian them self due to their misinterpretation of Biblical scriptures. But yes, I do agree, many Christians do poorly represent themselves as followers of Christ simply because they do not take the time to truly study the scriptures themselves, they let someone else tell them what the Bible means instead of finding their own answers. Its how the saying goes, "Christians nowadays are too well churched and not well versed."

I've always been a proponent of the idea that if you actually read the bible, from beginning to end, you are very likely to become atheist. Just the sheer number of contradictions alone... not to mention the mayhem, murder, cruelty.... I mean it's a pretty sick storybook.

I don't think it's the bibles fault for having mayhem murder and cruelty it was in the ancient times where these things were fairly common. Rome and other super world powers weren't terribly kind to everything that wasn't under their banner.

Well, the Bible certainly wasn't meant to be a storybook for kids, the issues written about in the Scriptures are very bloody and brutal. The Bible is not just a collection of spiritual and religious texts, there is politics, war, murder, rape, evil actions of all kinds and the consequences for said actions. And yes, I am sure that some people who read the Bible are reject it just as others accept it. As for the contradictions, well you can chalk a great deal of those to Biblical poetry, and the differences written down among the various authors of the individual scriptures, remember, the Bible was compiled via a number of texts at the Council of Nicaea and along the way of copying and translating, there are sure to be quite a number of mistakes.

Yes, and that's my point. It was written and compiled by fallable men, so to take it as a launching point for a religion and claim that it is god's truth is rendered ridiculous, hence apostasy is the natural course post-reading. But that's just my interpretation.

Stopping criminals from committing crimes doesn't mean taking out a bat and beating them before they've done anything. There's a reason they don't put people like you in charge of other people lives. nooooo I will never let anyone interpret the bible for me. i always go to the bible if i need to see if certain scriptures were written as people are interpreting them. the bible it does hold importance to me though im just not big on reading.

Well, the ten commandments that we know, including ''Thou Shalt Not Kill'', come for a list of over 600 ''commandments'' called the Mitzvot, from the Old Testament. Funnily enough, orthodox Jews still adhere to all of them (or at least, they try).
