Also why the prime meridian is in Greenwich. Crafty Brits making themselves the center of attention.

Good reason too, GMT is the central time on Earth, makes sense to put it in the middle

Actually, your logic is backwards, since the reason why Greenich became the central time zone is the same as the reason it's at the center of maps - Brittain ruling the world during colonial times.

That does not invalidate my point. It also doesn't make you any less wrong.

your point was moot to begin with. Regardless of how GMT came about, GMT 0 is still London, so it still makes sense to put it in the centre.

Isn't the Prime Meridian in the middle of the map?

The British actually made the first maps that had accurate longitude measurements with them and the prime meridian runs through Greenwich, England where the royal observatory is. They had a contest to see who could come up with a device to accurately measure longitudes and in order to have a benchmark, the royal observatory was to be the prime meridian. That's what my professor told me so take it for what it's worth.

False. That map indicates zulu time. The post shows the international dateline and Greenwich

Because where you make the map is always the unchanging center.

Oh when Americans make a map it's about them needing to be the center of attention but when England makes a map it's about the location of where the map is made that puts that location in the center of the map.

Actualy, it's because during the late middle ages/renesance, britain, france, spain and portugal was litteraly the center of the world, both when it comes to economy and military. Not to mention they were the primary causes an accurate world map could be drawn. Most modern maps drawn in europe place britain in the center both as an honorary nod to them, and because it's convenient since no continents are sliced in half.

Cept their maps of the world were the first. Not to mention it doesn't cut any continent in half. It's just a convention.

Actually, it was the Muslims who attempted to make the first accurate maps of the world.

Notice who's in the middle here.

also you know that map is upside down, if you can read Arabic you will find that all the words are upside down since the early Muslim geographers viewed the world opposite to how we see it today, and the weird thing is is that they weren't exactly wrong

Never heard that before, but it might also be because centering the earth on any other position will leave you staring at a whole lot of the Pacific and end up cutting some poor continent in half.

I always thought maps looked like that because GMT, all the countries that are -GMT are on the left and all the countries that are +GMT, so it makes sense that England is in the middle.
