actually the british made the first maps thats why london england is in the middle of most modern maps. the more you know...
User avatar #469 to #7 - generaljackass (03/21/2013) [-]
Also why the prime meridian is in Greenwich. Crafty Brits making themselves the center of attention.
User avatar #432 to #7 - lordmoldywart (03/21/2013) [-]
Good reason too, GMT is the central time on Earth, makes sense to put it in the middle
#435 to #432 - delivering (03/21/2013) [-]
Actually, your logic is backwards, since the reason why Greenich became the central time zone is the same as the reason it's at the center of maps - Brittain ruling the world during colonial times.
User avatar #437 to #435 - lordmoldywart (03/21/2013) [-]
Your spelling's pretty backwards too
#442 to #437 - delivering (03/21/2013) [-]
That does not invalidate my point. It also doesn't make you any less wrong.
#462 to #442 - anonymous (03/21/2013) [-]
your point was moot to begin with. Regardless of how GMT came about, GMT 0 is still London, so it still makes sense to put it in the centre.

But i most say, splitting the map by the pacific is a good idea, since only that one little bit is cut over
User avatar #290 to #7 - psykobear (03/21/2013) [-]
Isn't the Prime Meridian in the middle of the map?
#273 to #7 - usernameerror (03/21/2013) [-]
The British actually made the first maps that had accurate longitude measurements with them and the prime meridian runs through Greenwich, England where the royal observatory is. They had a contest to see who could come up with a device to accurately measure longitudes and in order to have a benchmark, the royal observatory was to be the prime meridian. That's what my professor told me so take it for what it's worth.

False. That map indicates zulu time. The post shows the international dateline and Greenwich
#138 to #7 - rmoran (03/21/2013) [-]
Because where you make the map is always the unchanging center.
User avatar #266 to #138 - toosexyforyou (03/21/2013) [-]
Oh when Americans make a map it's about them needing to be the center of attention but when England makes a map it's about the location of where the map is made that puts that location in the center of the map.
#387 to #266 - anonymous (03/21/2013) [-]
Actualy, it's because during the late middle ages/renesance, britain, france, spain and portugal was litteraly the center of the world, both when it comes to economy and military. Not to mention they were the primary causes an accurate world map could be drawn. Most modern maps drawn in europe place britain in the center both as an honorary nod to them, and because it's convenient since no continents are sliced in half.
#281 to #266 - anonymous (03/21/2013) [-]
Cept their maps of the world were the first. Not to mention it doesn't cut any continent in half. It's just a convention.
User avatar #126 to #7 - extooso (03/21/2013) [-]
actually gabon is in the middle of the map you uploaded
#124 to #7 - allamericandude (03/21/2013) [-]
Actually, it was the Muslims who attempted to make the first accurate maps of the world.

Notice who's in the middle here.
#149 to #124 - anonymous (03/21/2013) [-]
also you know that map is upside down, if you can read Arabic you will find that all the words are upside down since the early Muslim geographers viewed the world opposite to how we see it today, and the weird thing is is that they weren't exactly wrong
User avatar #381 to #149 - lolzordz (03/21/2013) [-]

#41 to #7 - anonymous (03/21/2013) [-]
Never heard that before, but it might also be because centering the earth on any other position will leave you staring at a whole lot of the Pacific and end up cutting some poor continent in half.

#19 to #15 - sheriffhd (03/20/2013) [-]
I always thought maps looked like that because GMT, all the countries that are -GMT are on the left and all the countries that are +GMT, so it makes sense that England is in the middle.
#109 to #19 - anonymous (03/21/2013) [-]
But England is in the middle cos they invented it...
#449 to #109 - sheriffhd (03/21/2013) [-]
