Piracy is only bad because that's how companies perceive it as. It hurts the people who don't pirate.

I'm fine with piracy as long it isn't stealing, but it's still hurting the industry in the form of extremely dumb business execs trying to make sure you don't pirate.

After doing some calculation, I figured out that the film industry loses less than 7% of their profits to piracy.

Cool. What about the video game industry? I guess I didn't specify that I was talking about video games.

All arguments in favour of piracy eventually come down to some bullshit about companies being "greedy" or gamers being poor. Newsflash! If you've got a problem with the prices, don't buy the games! The companies sell at that price because they know people will buy at that price, same reason Apple sell earbuds for about £30 a set when they make them for about £3, they make up the price, there's nobody to say "no that's far too high" and even when they do, it doesn't matter because it's a desired product. If y'all weren't so desperate to play the same games as everyone else the price wouldn't be so damn high.

It's not saying it's okay to pirate if you can't afford, it's saying that it doesn't hurt the developer because it would never be a sale in the first place.

And where did I say piracy was okay? I almost always pay for the games I play, unless they make it so the game is no longer available except some near-broken cart on ebay for over $100. I've spent over one thousand dollars on Steam. I like to support people who make these awesome things. But there does exist a gray area where you can talk about if it really does or does not hurt the developers if you pirate. I've never said it was right. I'm not missing the point; you are. If you make piracy, or any other discussion for that matter, into a black-or-white issue then you just show ignorance. Piracy has many angles to discuss but people like you just assume pirates are evil. Is it evil to want to know a bit about the product before buying? You look at TV's on a wall in the department stores and you sit in the chairs at furniture stores. You can try on clothing to see how it looks on you. And yes, some games have demos or trailers but those are made by the publisher to showcase the best parts of the game and hide the faults. That's not a fair representation.

Well it makes sense if you go buy it every time. But I'm thinking of the "well I wouldn't have bought it anyway so it's not hurting anyone" kind of excuse.

This really only applies to digital items, we are only making copies, not taking the real thing.
If i took a book from the bookstore it would be a different thing then pirating the book.

A printed book cost a certain amount to manufacture, while the digital copy took nothing. If you were to steal a copy of a book because you cant afford it, it's wrong because you make someone lose money, because they had to pay to print the book. But if you pirate a book, they lose nothing because they spent nothing to make the digital copy.

Essentially

Real book option 1 ) steal book, dont pay for it -- someone loses money
real book option 2) steal book, pay for it -- someone makes money
digital book option 1 ) pirate book, dont pay for it -- no one loses money
digital book option 2) pirate book, pay for it -- someone makes money

This is how i see it at least, its probably still not the most sound logic though.

Normally I'd agree with this, but in this day and age I can't. Digital is taking over physical goods as literally everything from books, games, magazines and so-on are being sold digitally, so those digital 'copies' are essentially also consumer goods. In a sense yes, it's either no one makes money or someone does, but I suppose that's more edging towards trying to justify not to purchase something just to save some cash, not that I'm against saving money, but if you like the product then just shell out the cash. I mean, they made a product geared towards people who'd purchase it and enjoy it, but they're really only getting half the deal here if people enjoy it, but don't purchase it.

As for the whole piracy thing I'm fine with it only to a degree though. I have friends who tell me they only buy it if they like it, but then here's 3 of my buddies who exactly that, pirate Skyrim and say it's the greatest thing they ever played and 6 months later they still have the game pirated.

Want to try the game out before shelling out money? Sure, why not.
Can't afford the game currently but plan on purchasing it in the future? Go for it.
