I once posted the lightest of all black jokes on my university facebook group using the racist dog meme and my god, all the white liberal douches got so butthurt about it. One called me a 'cunt' (which was very unnecessary) and all the others accused me of being a racist. Even my black friends saw the funny side to the joke. If they're not offended, then why the fuck should those liberal douches be god I hate them!

Never read the book, but I've always enjoyed the song "Tom Hanks" by Rush.

I think that's pretty reasonable. Back then, calling him by that name would have been totally acceptable - the point was to show that he and Huckleberry were friends despite the racial tensions.

Today, using the N-word, even though totally acceptable in that context, would change the dynamic. In the back of the audience's mind, they're thinking "Oh my god, how can they be friends and talk to each other like that?" which would change the entire point of their relationship.

I haven't read the books in a while, but I don't think the friends used the n-word on each other. I think it was the slave owners and other racist people calling them that. But I think once Tom or Huck was friends with a black person, they never used the n-word.

So the point would be that only the bad, racist people used that name, where the friends grew past that... which I would think is something we want to keep teaching today?

Right, but back then it wasn't so taboo. It's be like today if there was an interracial friendship and the black guy called the white one honkey or cracker. It's a mildly offensive term, but they're friends enough to use it.

Turn it around and have the white guy calling the black one nigger, and many people would find that reprehensible, and it would change the dynamic of the friendship in their eyes, even if the two friends found it totally acceptable.

Especially in school where the teachers would have to waste precious time explaining it away or explaining why it's okay, it makes sense to me, especially since the inclusion of it changes how some people interpret the story and the characters while removing it brings it closer to what the author intended.

Yeah, Nigger Jim is essentially his name. Huckleberry doesn't use it in a derogatory way. To him it'd be just like calling a short guy Tiny or a skinny guy Slim or something.
