I'm sure you wouldn't be saying that if they were handing out the Qu'ran, or The God Delusion.

If they come shoving it up in my face, they better be prepared for some rude remarks, sly gestures or just general "asshattery".

No one ever said they were shoving them in people's faces, asshat. He simply said that they were passing them out.

Self-Righteous assholes handing out their holy books to anyone who walks by.. i'm pretty sure that takes away some of the "Devine" nature of the bible. Want to know what else people do that with? Business cards

I just don't like how the bible is everywhere now, like you can go to a economy motel and find it in the nightstand. If it was the Quran, they would have been put out of business

We did a bit on Islam in World History. I actually agreed with a few of the things Mohammed preached. Treating your wife as a partner, giving money to the poor, marrying/caring for widows and orphans. Pretty nice stuff.

Leviticus 20:9

If anyone curses his father or mother, he must be put to death.
20:10 If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife—with the wife of his neighbor—both the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death.
20:13 If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death.
Deuteronomy 22:20-1 If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the girl’s virginity can be found, she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done a disgraceful thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father’s house.
Exodus 35:2

For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD. Whoever does any work on it must be put to death.
Ephesians 5:22-24 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
Exodus 21:20-21 If a man beats his male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies as a direct result, he must be punished, but he is not to be punished if the slave gets up after a day or two, since the slave is his property.
1 Peter 2:13 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every authority instituted among men.
2:18 Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh.
Leviticus 25:44-45

Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property.
Read your own book before bashing another.

those are almost entirely old testament son if you read the new testament you'll clearly see Jesus say's something like my coming has fulfilled the old laws and I give to you new laws. the only people who should be following the old testament are the Jewish folks.
User avatar #88 to #75 - hauptishere (03/17/2013) [-]

Eyuup who knows maybe Moses didn't really write down what he was supposed to ? maybe his brother Aron was a liar ? maybe they just misunderstood what they were told ? maybe god just decided to take a new approach ? who knows.

You're kidding correct? None of those are out of context. Well, technically yes they are out of context. For them to not be you would have to write down the entire bible. But if you're talking about the surrounding context then yes they still are TECHNICALLY out of context. But now you have to ask yourself, "Would the surround context have any effect on the meaning of these verses?". The answer would be no.

Not him, but here's the deal.

For Jews, yes, Lavitical law still applies.

For Christians, Christ came to fulfill the law. Basically he came and gave us two new laws (Love God, Love Each Other) and told us that the old laws were done with.
User avatar #102 to #87 - DivderOfZero (03/17/2013) [-]
So you think that slavery is okay? Jesus did.

He interacts with Roman slaves. That is NOT a very different kind of slave at all.

Just because you said it doesn't make it true. The way we view slaves is the same way Romans viewed them.

Like I said. It is pretty much the same.
#104 to #102 - tomthehippie (03/17/2013) [-]
Give me a verse that states that.

Also, considering the two commandments Jesus gave us, to love God and to love each other, how could you love someone and enslave them?

There for, nope.
User avatar #105 to #104 - DivderOfZero (03/17/2013) [-]
Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ. (Ephesians 6:5 NLT)

I can give more than just that one if you would like.
#107 to #105 - tomthehippie (03/17/2013) [-]
So, said by Paul (or was it John who role Ephesians?) and not Jesus?

Besides, how does that sync with "love each other"?

So yeah, try again.
User avatar #113 to #107 - DivderOfZero (03/17/2013) [-]
Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go; just as you believed, it will be done for you.” And the servant was healed at that hour. (Matther 8:13)

In this verse Jesus heals a Roman soldiers servant/slave. Why would he not condone slavery while doing this? Also back to your point about "Christ came to fulfill the law" you are aware the 10 commandments are in the Old Testament correct?
#133 to #113 - tomthehippie (03/17/2013) [-]
Yes, but "fulfill" means the laws and proficiencies that spoke to his coming. He also, quite clearly states, that there are two laws that should be followed above all else, and that any law that doesn't check with these two laws is unjust.

These laws are, "Love God" and, wait for it! "Love each other". I might have said it a few times.

Also, servant doesn't mean slave. At that time, often one would have a manservant, maid, or the like who would live in your house and take care of it. Especially as the centurion you speak of in that verse was a man of rank (where he says that Jesus need not come, but merely state that his servant is healed and it will be so, for does not he [the centurion] command men, saying "go and he goeth"), there for, going by the social standards of the time, it is highly likely that this was a servant who was probably paid to keep the house in line for the centurion when he was away.

There for, any laws (biblical or secular) that contradict these two laws are not laws we, as Followers of Christ, are called to obey.

Does that make it any clearer? Or are you so wrapped up in your "superior" atheist ways as to refuse any fact that doesn't check with your world view?
User avatar #166 to #133 - DivderOfZero (03/20/2013) [-]
If you read it in the original hebrew the word is more like slave that it is servant. Not wearing a cloth made of two fibers was an old testament rule. That doesn't contradict "Love God" nor "Love each other" yet do any Christian societies follow? No. Nor do they follow many of the others rules that do not contradict the two you put forth.
