According to Top Gear, the Prius hurts the environment more than a land rover, even in the long term, due to the way it is manufactured. parts of the battery is dug out in America, then shipped to Europe to be refined, then shipped to China to be made into batteries, and then shipped to Japan to be put into the cars.

But he's actually right though. Lithium ion batteries are incredibly bad for the environment due to the way the ore is mined, refined and then shipped, much less the rest of the car it goes into.

Also, magazines can be a good source of scholarly information such as aviation week, popular mechanics, various scientific journals and so on.

Its not the lithium its the rare earth metals like Lanthanum that are used and dug up in china and along with the transportation of the batteries that cause more pollution than any old muscle car thats been around since the 1960s

I think he was referring to the validity of the information in the magazines, not the lithium ion batteries.

You do know that top gear hates anything good for the environment. Just look up the Tesla they put on that show.

science.howstuffworks.com/science-vs-myth/everyday-myths/does-hybrid-car- production-waste-offset-hybrid-benefits1.htm

TL;DR: for specific cars, maybe a prius is worse. But for the majority, the fuel not polluted into the air actually does far outweigh the manufacturing effects.

MFW people think that driving big/sport cars are worse for the environmen than:
Coal fires
Volcanoes
Industry
CHINESE industry
Power plants
Cutting down the rain forest
Sponsoring the ones who cut down the rain forest and generally **** on the environment by eating at McDonalds and buying chinese products

Seriously, the benefit of driving a ******* smartcar compared to a gas guzzling dodge pickup is infinitesimal except for in your wallet. Did you know that every oil field was a environmental disaster before petroleum got valuable? Eco nazis rustle my jimmies so much because they have about the same touch with reality as PETA. How about driving a real car and don't ******* litter everywhere? And since the earth has gone an abnormally long time without an ice age maybe we SHOULD heat it up to avoid disaster? And scientists say that in just a million years life on earth will be impossible, not from lack of oxygene but from lack of carbon dioxide... Hey guys, what can we do to cirkulate more CO2 in the atmosphere?

TL;DR we know precisely **** about the workings of the environment, especially the scientists.

my car is a vw golf. i'm so poor.

I AGREE and i want to point something out to the "eco nazi's", going green isnt going green..... the polution it takes to build a prius is equal to driving a 1955 chevy every day from the day it rolled out of the factory.....so you people going green is just cause more damage.

Now ask yourself how much industry goes into the manufacturing of a car? Guess what they don't plop out of thin air, companies have to go in and extract resources and spend energy to build those cars. Part of the reason the Chesapeake bay is so ****** up is from all the Sulfur dioxide being speed out in Ohio by car factories... Go ahead with the red thumbs I know I will get no love here.

Infact a diagram on just how excess CO2 pumped into atmosphere gets put back into the and reformed into an acid.

Although one car on the road obviously won't do anything that not my argument against the picture, its the idea that people can keep making cars in the quantity they do. As far as environmental science goes we should be using trains to get everywhere since your average freight train can get up to 400 miles to the gallon.
