Didn't think so.

this is so fucking wrong it makes me want to hunt you down and punch you in the face. the US has 51 of these jets in use, and yes they do use them with VTOL available, thats vertical take of and landing if you didnt know, like a helicopter. fucking check your facts before you post shit like this
Please tell us, OP, does your precious human genome have the ability to blow up brown people?

I love how this went over the head of every one commenting. Nuh uhh the jet is super useful. The fucking thing cost 2 trillion dollars, an eighth of the US debt for a fucking airplane! People want to know how to get out of debt? Stop spending trillions on weapons that will inevitably be outdated in the next 15 years anyways.

guys, i dont think you understand what hes trying to say here. its a plane, are you listening? its a plane, that takes off, like a helicopter! a motherfucking helicopter, but its a plane. do you not understand how amazing this is? It may not be complete yet, but its a fucking plane that takes off like a helicopter. how fucking amazing. this is the new age of travel and combat here people. everyday human life will be changed by this. It is probably one of the most important and amazing inventions since air guys.

Wow, the comments holy fuck. This plane costed an eighth of our national debt when our only real enemies are third world hell holes that can't even launch a missle more than a few thousand miles and use outdated weapons from the cold war? FFS we aren't waging a war with russian and you dumbfucks on funnyjunk support this shit? Funnyjunk is so politically backwards sometimes its hilarious. No wonder we are almost as bad as fucking 9gag.

1.9 trillion dollars was the entire cost of the program, which spans something like fifty years and involves 2,000+ jets ordered at increments (each costing about 200 million dollars). This is a fairly standard plane contract, and almost half the world's superpowers are locked in to the same order right now with lockheed martin.
Not to mention the fact that without a military to protect our freedom to research, draw conclusions, and publish results, the human genome project would never have happened.

Because a jet is able to get to areas much faster than a helicopter and not needing a landing strip is useful to places without landing strips...you know, places that have been destroyed by earthquakes or hurricanes...or y'know...hospitals

nobody questions the legitimacy of this post and frankly i'm a little surprised. The F-35's work fine and they've been in mass production for a while now. also, only one variant of three is actually meant to hover, the project isn't nearly that expensive, nor is it recent. the first prototype made its inaugural flight in 2006.
I could name everything wrong about your statement but most people that care anyway have already made a comment on it. What the hell.
VTOL is not a goal of the F-35, only STO and VL. It lands like a helicopter, but it can take off on shorter runways than normal planes. It is designed not around this feature, but as an upgrade to a part of every branch of the military's air forces. This feature is also available. There are problems with several bits of the testing, but this has been found in every aircraft ever produced. The plane is undergoing more testing before full production is stepped up. It's expensive, sure, but it's an extremely effective way of unifying production between the different military branches. If you want to talk about an expensive failure of a military project, let's talk about the f-22. Yeah, it's awesome, but it's FAR too expensive for what it does, especially when it can be matched or beaten by competitors for 1/4 the cost.
Also, I fail to understand the "commercial development" from the HGP. 140 for every dollar? That sounds more like corporate gains to me.

F-22 Raptors can already do this
It is a special model with a lighter weight frame and less stealth and less maneuverability than the unencumbered unaltered models
the reason the F-35 is being invented is to combine all of the awesomeness of the the F-22 with more electronic and stealth capabilities and none of the former weaknesses.

I don't mind us spending money on engineering/technical advances. I think we should try to gain knowledge and advance in all the fields we can. But I think this illustrates that we give money way more easily to projects that can be used militarily, rather than ones that simply make our lives better. And that's one of the saddest facts I can think of - we're spending more money on killing people we don't know, for reasons that are either not that important or simply made up, rather than making the world a better place (or simply a place easier to live in).
