I've known my best friend since we were 4 (13 years I think) and I have been through everything with this dude, I din't even know where to start. I mean we're so close I've literally held his hand while he took a **** and this was like 2 weeks ago. But now that you mention it I only have like 2 or 3 friends I've known for more than 2 years.

Its not so much being gay its just more like "Oh you left the door open while taking a ****? I'll just make this awkward then." But the thing was... It wasn't awkward.

>On vacation
>Meet someone
>Hey lets hang out
>Friends
>Week ends, you go back home
>No longer friends
>7 day friendship

**** like that brings down the average. People die, move away, etc.
It's like the atomic weight of Oxygen. Something like 16.2, but no Oxygen atom can ever have a mass of 16.2 only 16, or 17, or some outlier number. Just because it's the average, doesn't make it the most common.

Another example. 80 people have 500 apples, 20 people have 1 apple. Average is 400.2 apples, but that's not really accurate.

Almost every friend I have I've been friends with for over 10 years, and I'm 21. Some of my friends I've been friends with since pre-k. I don't know who burns bridges that fast, but 2 years seems like a very short friendship.

Sometimes it's not a matter of burning bridges, it's a thing of circumstances.

I go to a international school, and people come and go all the time. Some of the nicest/coolest guys and girls I've met have only been able to stay a year or two in the country I live in due to embassy duties/business reasons, so the average friendship here is around a year and a half.

Granted, I have a few friends who've been lucky enough to stay in the country and who I've enjoyed the friendship of for seven years(been here seven years), but the vast majority of the people I've met leave within 1-3 years. It's the normal here, but it's made me realize something very important.

The length of a friendship does not measure its value. Some of the best friendships I've had only lasted two years, and some of the far more boring ones lasted four or five. The memories you share with each other are what count the most, and quality is just as valuable as quantity.

Besides, the fact that people come and go is not always a bad thing. I have met some absolutely spectacular individuals due to the fact that so many of my friends move every year, forcing me and all others here to be warm and welcoming whether we want to or not. It's a completely different style of relationships, and while they may seem "more superficial" I've actually found that kids that move regularly/have friends move regularly tend to open up faster. This speeds things up a bit, for both good and bad things.

Count yourself lucky to have friends you've known for so long, and keep them close.

Being in a different country does not stop you from being friends. My best friends are still the friends I had from kindergarten. And that is after we all went to study abroad. Some in the UK, some in America and some stayed in Greece. Ofcourse we met other interesting people and made friends, but the new people I have met I do not consider them as my real friends. They are just people I like to hang out with. A true friendship will and has to last and go through many hardships.
Your point still stands, whoever has friends they've known for so long are insanely lucky and should keep them, as they are the only ones that will help you when you are down.

Ah, but we are talking about two different situations. You do keep friends from the group you graduated with, but the thing is you grew up with those people. Over 80% of my year has been here less than 5 years, and that is just the nature of the school I'm in. In set of international schools where a good 10% of the year leaves every semester just to be replaced, it is regularly a lot harder to hang on to friendships.

Of course, I still have a few I regularly talk to, but no one in this setting can afford to rely solely on friends who've moved. This isn't college/studying abroad, we're high school students from all around the world and all living in countries we are by no means native to. With the high frequency of moves+huge amounts of people you meet, you only hang on to two or three friends online, the rest must simply be replaced. This sounds cruel, but they do the same to you as it is the only logical choice in such a situation.

It's not so much burning bridges, it's just sometimes you stop being in the same setting with that person so you drift apart. It's not very noticeable unless you go from constantly hanging out with that person to barely seeing each other.

This is me and my best friend, who I've known for about 7 years now. His dad and mine were friends in High School and we met in one of those High School reunions. We live 8 blocks away from each other and have almost the same taste in everything. We like rock, metal, porn and bean burritos. I can honestly say it's the only friend I've ever had in my life. This is a picture from a few months ago. We're both 17, and just last week we were in a car crash and he's really delicate in the hospital. I'll never find another friend like him, I'm completely sure. He's helped me out in so many ways that I'll never find a way to pay him back. I'm really sad and worried right now, but I'm sure he'll be better. He means my life to me, no homo.

(He's the one in the white shirt and I'm the one in brown.)

I know nobody cares, just wanted to post it.

I may not be the most socially popular but I'm glad that my friendship with my own friends had been stronger, longer and more genuine throughout the years as opposed to a lot of women.
