I read somewhere that they did that in case one of those doors were hidden, so that it would at least read "Don't Open" or "Dead Inside."

It would be easy to ensure that the sentences were easily distinguished from one another, by putting them on an angle or putting a border around them or something like that.
And if you're going to plan for the loss of part of the message, why not just create redundancy?
