I no longer give "homeless" people money, not since I started realizing that they were wearing nicer clothes than me. I know that it could be possible their fancy clothes could have been donated, but they're usually immaculate, and their clothes match. After a while it's easy to tell who's faking and who really just needs a meal. I'll gladly buy a real hobo a burger. In my experience, fake ones will hang out by malls and popular bus and train stops and can be quite rude and pushy, real guys down on their luck will awkwardly hang out by a Mcdonald's and ask politely, almost like they're ashamed. Hope it helps.

Living in a college in a city has gotten me way too desensitized to beggars. They've all got the same fucking tactic: They walk up to you with a friendly greeting ("Hey man! How's it going? I bet the basketball team is going to win tonight!") and then get all serious before they ask you for cash ("Hey man, look, alright, I'm just out here, I'm a good guy, you know...")...
<--and then, MFW.
I don't want to become too brash, but this shit gets expensive. Especially during my first few months there, when I felt guilty and handed out cash like the Publisher's Clearing House.
