Little known fact: Copernicus was a Catholic priest, or at least a deacon. Major inventor of the Big Bang theory was Father Lemaitre. Galileo, who many point to in order to galvanize Catholics(over dramatically), was a devout Catholic till his death. On the microscopic scale, the vast science of genetics and heredity would not be possible without Father Mendel and his peas. The list goes on and on. Not to mention religious schools educated many of the men and women who made these projects possible.

the problem isn't that the church and it's members cant be scientific it's that then and now the church uses its power to stifle any theory that goes against what they have preached

Heliocentric theory back in the day? Everyone believed in geocentric theory, not just the church, and there was not enough evidence yet to outright disprove it. Evolution? They agree with it. Stem cell research? Fine as long as it isn't embryonic(which is more unstable and unsafe anyways). Aliens? The Church says they very much could exist.
