The portuguese debt is completely unmanageable. At the end of the regime it was at 34%, now its probably at 140%. Since the regime, the country has gone bankrupt twice, and had its industry completely destroyed. In the period of 1960-1974, Portugal had an economical growth of 7% per year, which is a lot. It's the choice of having a wealthy confortable life while living under a (mostly) benign dictatorship against being poor and unemployed, and have the right to strike and protest, which we do almost every day and fixes nothing.
Portugal also lost all its overseas provinces after the revolution which made it completely irrelevant in the world stage.

When did i have to decide between the two? Shit, looks like I'm going to have to go decide between being able to wear pants and whether or not my land lord gets a tax refund this year.

In Portugal when we got free speech we lost the economy. When we lost free speech in 1933 we got a good economy. So you see where i am coming from.

Well, if you judge the superiority of a government based on its strength and ability to control and manipulate a population, then sure, democracy might not be that great. And authoritarian, empirical forms of government historically have tended to be more stable--at least back in the days when people believed their emperors were directly connected to their gods. But most modern societies have evolved to believe that governments are given their power by people, not god. And democracies--particularly democratic republics--are also the most efficient method of protecting the rights and wills of the people. That's why democratic republics have been adopted--in various forms--by most first-world nations.

Yes, because the world's totalitarianisms and oligarchies are all doing so well.
