I am a dude(not gay) and I fucking loved this movie. And I really wouldn't say Russell Crowe was shit. He is never shit in any of his movies. But I have to agree that he wasn't exactly the best of all the actors. Anne Hathaway was pretty damn good though, especially in "I Dreamed a Dream."

He had an ok voice, but you could really tell he didn't know why the hell he was there. He's ordinarily a pretty solid actor, but in this he fell way short. He was very stiff, and never got into the full swing of his character. Marius though, holy shit. Marius singing empty chairs at empty tables blew me away, the raw emotion in his voice and facials, pure mother fucking talent in that boy.

I agree highly! The whole cast put so much emotion into their performances, especially Marius. And yeah I agree about Crowe as Javert. He is normally a great actor, but he indeed is a rather stiff and serious person. He just didn't have as much emotion as Fantine or Marius.
I read the book before I saw the movie. I hated Javert in the book, he seemed like a total asshole. The movie played him as a total asshole, but you almost feel sorry for him. He sees all criminals, no matter what they have done or whatever their motives were, as pure evil. And he sees law abiding citizens as pure good. And he sees himself as a man who has the sole purpose to deal with all criminals. I felt bad for him in the movie much more than the book, so props to Crowe for that.
