in this thread: retards trying to sound smart but saying the wrong thing. except the guy with the dog he has some sort of idea of what he is doing...

trees use fotosynthesis to produce sugar that they can then use to produce energy through respiration which uses oxygen and produces CO2.

Well to be fair it is wearing an oxygen mask and tank

why would a tree want oxygen, obviosly its a co2 mask and tank

plants use photosynthesis and cellular respiration, photosynthesis creates glucose from CO2 and then uses that glucose to create its ATP in cellular respiration which uses oxygen. Plants don't use cellular nearly as much as normal animals because they don't require very much energy to live.

actually, at night, some plants will reverse their breathing mechanism and start breathing oxygen in and carbon dioxide out, mainly to continue making nutrients in the dark. though once the sun comes up, they go back to their normal breathing pattern. now i can't name any of these plants off, but i know they exist.

Actually, most plants work like this. I'm no expert, but I think it's bout 99%. That's why you shouldn't have loads of plants in your room as you might suffocate, however unlikely.

interesting.

so, if regular plants shift breathing cycles, do other organisms like mushrooms do the same?

Most if not all fungi are chemoheterotrophs.
User avatar #6 to #5 - sonoobish (03/03/2013) [-]
yes they take in CO2 and produce O2

Photosynthesis produces a decent amount of energy for the cells to use, on its own. But not all of a plant's cells are capable of photosynthesis, they need to use the sugars that were produced by the other cells in order to carry out Glycolysis and, ultimately, aerobic respiration to produce ATP. Even the photosynthetic cells need a source of energy at night. Almost every eukaryote goes through respiration!

Tl;dr: Plants both take in and produce both CO2 and O2
