Guy below is only sort of right. Back a few years, in the seventies or so, cults were running a muck, cultists here, cultists there, hundreds of them. A few particular cults were... rather insane, their leaders being greedy fucking bastards, they managed to convince the lowers that the rapture was going to commence and to guarantee safety from God's wrath they must die before the rapture happens. The cults all gathered together knowing they were going to be poisoned and brought friends and family who didn't know they were going to be poisoned, and disguised it as a very big barbeque. The kool-aide was tampered with Cyanide and was given to everybody, who proceeded to drop dead all at once. That's where the phrase "Don't drink the kool-aide" comes from, it means stop following the asinine leaders and stop being a sheep before you hurt yourself.

A lot of cults would put cyanide in kool aide and drink it together, a lot of the people unknowing it was poisoned.

Long story short, there was a guy with a cult following, and he got them all to drink kool-aid that had poison in it, to kill themselves. So there's an expression that is "don't drink the kool-aid" meaning don't blindly buy into things or follow what people say.
